It was only a matter of time before the Reno Aces' Alek Thomas was called up to the big leagues.
The left-handed hitting outfielder got that call Sunday, 10 days after turning 22 years old, and cashed in during his second major-league at-bat with a rocket off the wall. Thomas went 1-of-3 in the game, with a double and run scored as Arizona beat Colorado, 4-0.
Hitting eighth in the order, Thomas went 1-of-3, striking out in the second inning, doubling in the fifth and grounding out to second in the sixth.
“A double off the wall for your first major-league hit, it's a great moment, a great moment for his family,” Arizona manager Torrey Lovullo said. “Everybody who's had the opportunity to get their first major league hit, it's going to be a great day of celebration.”
Thomas entered the season ranked the No. 14 prospect in baseball by ESPN. A second-round draft pick in 2018, the Chicago native made his Triple-A debut late last season. In two years in Reno, Thomas hit .332 with a .996 OPS and 12 homers, 19 doubles and five triples in 58 games. This season, he was hitting .277 with four homers in 24 games.
Arizona's other highly regarded center field prospect, Corbin Carroll, could get called up to Triple-A Reno to fill Thomas' spot. The 21-year-old Carroll, a first-round pick in 2019, is hitting .326 with nine homers in 24 games for Double-A Amarillo.
