APPLETON - The cleanup of two precast concrete spans that collapsed during the construction of the Appleton YMCA's $7.5 million parking ramp will begin Tuesday. The work is expected to last five to seven workdays.

The investigation into what caused the collapse will continue during the cleanup. The site is located at Soldiers Square, 120 S. Oneida St.

"At this time, we know the collapse occurred at night after work concluded on Friday, April 1," said Sam Statz, president of Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, which is the project's construction manager. "It involved two installed double-tee panels. Fortunately, the construction site was not occupied at the time of the collapse, so no one was hurt or injured."

Statz said Hoffman's investigation into the mishap will include consulting with the installing subcontractor and the supplier.

After the cleanup, the damaged areas will be repaired or replaced, and the construction will resume. The interruption isn't expected to have a measurable effect on the project’s completion, which is scheduled for August.

"Until the investigation is complete, we will be unable to state with certainty what caused the collapse," Statz said. "However, we can say with 100% certainty that when the project is complete, the parking ramp will be safe, secure and sound."

Bill Breider, president and CEO of YMCA of the Fox Cities, said the YMCA has complete trust in Hoffman and all its construction partners involved in the project.

"We know that Hoffman will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover why this occurred, take the necessary corrective action to get the project back on track and ultimately deliver us a high-quality, safe and reliable parking ramp,” Breider said.

Construction of the new parking ramp started last fall. It will have three stories and 303 stalls and will replace the Soldiers Square parking ramp, a fixture of downtown Appleton for more than 50 years before it was razed last year.

During construction, the Appleton YMCA, 218 E. Lawrence St., has advised its members and participants to use a temporary surface parking lot located south of the YMCA on land owned by U.S. Venture.
