Nelson, charged with attempted criminal assault of a white woman in Miami, was found the next morning riddled with bullets next to a canal west of Delray Beach. This free event will feature the opening of “We Made It!,” the Norton’s Afterschool Arts Annual Exhibition, a family tour, a performance by Mr. Trombone Perry, a performance by Faith’s Place Center for Arts & Education, live art making and an eclectic array of African music and dance performances. The highlight of the event will be a ‘Spotlight’ on local artist Anthony Burks Sr. at 1 p.m. Two of Burks works will be officially unveiled, making Burks the first living local African-American artist to have an acquisition in the museum. The two pieces include “Mirror Black” and “Juneteenth,” which was created onsite at the Norton on June 19, 2021, at the first annual Juneteenth Family Celebration, will become part of the Norton’s permanent collection. Burks and the subject of “Mirror Black,” poet Jashua SaRa, will be doing a 15-minute Spotlight on the piece at 1 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., Burks’ wife, Trina Slade-Burks, will spotlight “Juneteenth,” based on the subject artist Ramel Jasir. Don’t miss the Black-owned business popup vendors including Kianga Jinaki, All About Us, The Gift Genie, and Helen’s Fire Sauce, and be sure to stay until the end for the closing performance by a Sunshine Junkanoo Band in the Goergen Garden!
