Editor’s Note: Welcome to Portland Monthly’s “Property Watch” column, in which we take regular looks at interesting homes on the market in Portland’s super-competitive real estate market (with periodic ventures to the burbs and points beyond, for good measure). This week: an eco-friendly Bend home with a courtyard that just won't quit. Got a home you think would work for this column? Get in touch at [email protected] .

Ski, bike, climb, golf, kayak, bird watch–Bend seriously has any and all of your outdoor pursuits covered. And when you’re done with all that activity, this house makes a case for down time, thanks in part to its orientation around a peaceful, South-facing courtyard.

Built in 2017, the home was designed by Washington firm Shackitecture to be nestled into its .22-acre site. Enter either via the front door or directly into the courtyard, which is wrapped on three sides by the one-level, 1990-square-foot plan. The craftsmanship here is evident from the get-go: with gorgeous glulam support beams gliding overhead and custom maple cabinetry throughout, including the foyer, the laundry room, the kitchen, bathrooms, and closets.

The pale tones of the maple are complemented by a streamlined palette: concrete, white walls, and windows galore looking into the courtyard, including a three-panel sliding glass door in the main room that opens to let in fresh air and birdsong. There’s also a band of clerestory windows with ribbed glass running along one wall in the main room, ensuring privacy while ushering in light.

The windows were sited not just for views, but for the home’s passive solar design, which capitalizes on day-lighting and helps minimize energy use in heating and cooling. And that’s not the only green cred here, as the home is also certified Earth Advantage Platinum.

Down the hall from the living spaces, there’s two bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as a primary suite, with its own luxe bathroom. Another plus: the radiant heating is zoned so as to customize temps in different areas, with an additional HEPA filtration air exchange system programmed to refresh indoor air every 20 minutes.

About that courtyard: It’s bordered by a gabion rock wall, which dampens sounds and fosters privacy. There’s a steel water feature, reflective pool, covered and uncovered patios, uplit paths, and a delightful hidden sauna tucked around the corner.

Additional storage lies behind a handcrafted steel gate, and there’s also the garage for all your gear: fully finished, with a little station for waxing skis when you need to get back out there after all this relaxing.
