MOSCOW (AP) — The funeral and burial plans for Mikhail Gorbachev sum up the crosscurrents of his legacy — final farewells are to be said in the same place where his rigid Soviet predecessors also lay, but he will be buried near men who broke the Soviet mold.
Gorbachev, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who died Tuesday, is to lie in state on Saturday in Moscow's House of Unions. The building located between the Bolshoi Theater and the Duma, the lower house of parliament, for decades held the bodies of deceased Soviet leaders, including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov and Konstantin Chernenko.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed legislation intended to open the way for California's last operating nuclear power plant to run an additional five years. The Diablo Canyon Power Plant is scheduled to close by 2025, but the new law gives operator Pacific Gas & Electric a pathway to seek an extended operating license with federal regulators. Newsom pushed for the longer run to ward off the risk of blackouts as the state transitions to solar and other renewables. Critics warn that the decades-old plant is unsafe. They say shaking from nearby earthquake faults could damage equipment and release radiation.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing back against ousted Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren’s claim that the governor violated his free speech rights when he suspended Warren last month.
At least eight migrants were killed as dozens attempted a hazardous crossing of the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas, officials said Friday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that it responded to the report Thursday of a large crossing of the Mexican border in the Rio Grande. U.S. officials recovered six bodies, while Mexican teams recovered two others, according to a CBP statement. The Border Patrol said U.S. crews rescued 37 migrants from the river and detained 16 others, while Mexican officials took 39 migrants into custody. Officials on both sides of the border continue searching for any possible victims, the CBP said.

Giants first baseman Brandon Belt will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Saturday in San Francisco. Belt had surgery on the same knee in 2015 and 2018. The 34-year-old has faced multiple stints on the injured list with knee inflammation this season, missing 23 games between May 19 and June 14. He last played on Aug. 20. After hitting a career-high 29 home runs last season, Belt was limited to eight this year, batting .213 in 78 games. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.
The Federal Trade Commission is investigating Amazon’s $3.9 billion acquisition of the primary health organization One Medical, a move that could delay the completion of the deal. According to a regulatory filing, both One Medical and Amazon received a request for additional information on Friday in connection with an FTC review of the merger. Amazon announced plans in late July to purchase One Medical, a concierge-type medical service with roughly 190 medical offices in 25 markets. Last week, the e-commerce giant said it would shutter its own hybrid virtual, in-home care service, which competed with One Medical, because it wasn’t meeting customers' needs.

Rizzo will rehab Saturday and Sunday in New York and possibly resume baseball activities Monday, with manager Aaron Boone not ruling out the slugger returning Tuesday. New York, which once held a 15 1/2-game lead in the AL East, started Friday six up on the Rays.

West Virginia's House speaker says he plans to contact members next week to call them back for a special session, likely to discuss an ongoing abortion bill. Speaker Roger Hanshaw says lawmakers' Sept. 12 return would coincide with regularly scheduled interim committee meetings. Before adjourning in July, the House refused to concur with Senate amendments on an abortion bill. Instead, the House asked for a conference committee to iron out differences. Senate President Craig Blair says Hanshaw's statement took him by surprise. Blair says he won't call senators back into session without a concrete plan for producing a bill that has the votes to pass both chambers.

Democrat Katie Hobbs is declining to participate in a head-to-head debate against Republican Kari Lake in the race for Arizona governor. Hobbs on Friday requested the candidates be interviewed individually instead. The Citizens Clean Elections Commission, which organizes debates in races up and down the ballot, said it would consider the request. The Hobbs campaign said the commission’s raucous Republican primary debate was fodder for late-night comedians, and she doesn’t want to participate in another spectacle. Lake called Hobbs a “coward” for refusing to debate. Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly and Republican Blake Masters both agreed to a televised debate sponsored by the commission on Oct. 6.
A man has pleaded guilty to murdering four women whose bodies were found in vacant Detroit houses in 2018 and 2019. Wayne County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Maria Miller said 37-year-old Deangelo Martin also pleaded guilty on Friday to sexually assaulting two other women. Martin pleaded guilty just days before he was scheduled to stand trial. An agreement with prosecutors that calls for him to be sentenced to 45 years to 70 years in prison. The plea comes three years after prosecutors announced the charges in the slayings that they characterized as the work of a serial killer. Martin is set to be sentenced on Oct. 6.
NEW YORK — A Brooklyn judge will allow people who have “some dislike” of former President Donald Trump to serve as jurors at the upcoming trial of his former associate Thomas Barrack, according to a ruling released Friday.
Democrat Katie Hobbs says she has declined to agree to a televised debate with Republican Kari Lake as both seek the Arizona governor’s office. Hobbs’ campaign instead proposed that she and Lake sit down separately with Arizona PBS moderator Ted Simons for 30-minute interviews. Lake's spokesman says voters deserve more than two candidates talking in separate rooms. Hobbs' campaign has been talking with the Citizens Clean Election Commission and Arizona PBS for weeks to try to agree on terms for the scheduled Oct. 12 debate. The debates are televised and streamed live across the state on PBS and numerous television stations.

North Carolina’s State Board of Elections has chosen not to fight a recent decision by the state rules panel blocking its proposed restrictions on party-appointed poll watchers this fall. But the board pledged Friday to do all it can to help county elections officials maintain a safe. orderly voting environment and to deter any voter intimidation. The state’s Rules Review Commission shot down two temporary rule changes last week that would have more clearly outlined the code of conduct for partisan election observers in response to more than a dozen reported violations during the May primaries. Republicans have been leading the charge to block the rule changes since June.
U.S. prosecutors say a tip along with the perseverance of the mother of a woman killed in San Diego in 2016 led to the arrest of her boyfriend who fled to El Salvador and was captured there last month. Raymond McLeod pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in San Diego Superior Court. He is accused of strangling his girlfriend, Krystal Mitchell, 30, a mother of two. His attorney could comment not be reached for comment.

NEW YORK — Officials from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration visited Texas on Friday to learn more about the state’s handling of an influx of Latin American migrants, thousands of whom have been sent to New York in recent months, putting a strain on the city’s homeless shelter system.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Kelly Susewind has authorized the killing of one wolf because of cattle attacks in northeast Washington. The Capital Press reports the Smackout wolf pack has attacked cattle in Stevens and Pend Oreille counties. The agency says non-lethal deterrents employed by several ranchers have not stopped the predations. The wolf pack crossed the line for the department to consider lethal control when it killed two calves and injured two others during the last two weeks in August. The agency says the decision to remove one wolf increases chances that enough adult wolves will survive to care for juveniles.
CNN White House correspondent John Harwood says he’s exiting the news channel. In a tweet Friday, he says he was proud of the work he'd done. His departure comes amid other significant changes at CNN. Last month, CNN canceled its weekly “Reliable Sources” media analysis show after three decades on the air, and host Brian Stelter left the network. The network is making a move to be less confrontational politically. Harwood came to CNN from CNBC, and previously worked at the St. Petersburg Times and the Wall Street Journal. Harwood said he looked forward to figuring out what's next. CNN didn't reply to a request for comment.

Court records show that the West Virginia man charged in a shooting at western Maryland machine shop that killed three coworkers has pleaded not criminally responsible for mental reasons. Joe Louis Esquivel is charged with murder, attempted murder and other offenses in the June 9 shooting at Columbia Machine in Smithsburg and an ensuing shootout with police. The Herald-Mail reports that in a recent filing, Esquivel asserted that at the time of the shootings he lacked the capacity to either “appreciate the criminality of the alleged conduct” or “conform that conduct to the requirements of law” due to a “mental disorder or mental retardation." A judge accepted the plea and approved Hutchison’s request for bifurcated trials.
Californians sweltering in the West’s lengthening heat wave have been asked to reduce air conditioning and cut other electricity use again to prevent stress on the state’s electrical grid that could lead to rolling blackouts. Friday is the third consecutive day of requests by the state’s grid operator for voluntary cutbacks during late afternoon and evening hours to balance supply and demand. The California Independent System Operator says multiple generators have been forced out of service because of the extreme heat, making energy supplies tighter. The grid operator says Thursday saw the highest electrical demand since September 2017, and there's major concern about even higher temperatures Sunday through Tuesday.
